Improving safety, productivity, and quality with ICT technology!

Kadonogumi Co., Ltd. in Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture. It owns 35 backhoes, 3 dozers, and many other construction equipment, and has many achievements in earthwork, and has been awarded as an excellent construction performance company for five consecutive years in the first year of Reiwa.

The company uses ICT not only in construction machinery but also in all processes from surveying, design, construction, and inspection. We asked about actual examples at river renovation construction sites, especially focusing on ICT construction machinery.

The decisive factor is the "retrofit" operation method.

Regarding the reason for adopting Topcon's Machine Control System (MC) and Machine Guidance System (MG) for the ICT of construction machinery, he said, "We have a large number of construction equipment, so we want to avoid renting ICT construction machinery. We thought about purchasing construction equipment with a built-in ICT system, but since the system could not be removed, felt uncomfortable about operation. I heard that Topcon's system can be installed on our own machines and can be replaced, so we decided to introduce it," says Mr. Shigeru Kadono, the company's CEO.

The company has many orders from Kyoto Prefecture and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. ICT construction would be the main trend in future ordering, and in order to maximize on-site productivity, they are actively investing in ICT not only in construction machinery but also in surveying equipment and other systems.

When we asked Mr. Hiroki Seta of the Construction Department, who is the on-site agent for this project, what kind of equipment was used in this river construction, he said, "For this river construction, we installed 3.5 backhoes equipped with the machine guidance system 3D-MG GNSS excavator "X-53x" and the machine-controlled 3D-MC GNSS mastless dozer "3D-MCMAX". " When I asked him about the unfamiliar number of "3.5 units", he said that one set of backhoes is replaced with a 0.45-ton class and a 0.7-ton class backhoe depending on the situation. So 3.5 units. This means that they are already practicing the "replacement" that President Mr. Kadono mentioned.

The GNSS receiver "GR-5" is used for the reference station installed at the site, and the "X-53x" backhoe is also compatible with multi-GNSS. When asked about the effects of this multi-GNSS, he said, "We receive about 20 satellite signals at any given time with GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou.

In addition, at the embankment site, "'3D-MCMAX' is very active," Mr. Hikita continues. "We use it for normal leveling, but it automatically controls the blade at the height of the set winding thickness, which improves construction efficiency." In any case, it seems clear that the use of ICT construction machinery is playing a role in improving productivity at the site. "In both MC and MG, if you understand what kind of system it is and operate it, even young employees can perform the construction in the same way as a skilled operator. The use of ICT construction machinery can minimize the need for preliminary surveying and finishing stake, so productivity can definitely be improved."

GNSS for surveying, LN-100 for inspections

GNSS for surveying. The LN-100 is also used for inspections.

Since the word "surveying" was mentioned, I asked about groundbreaking surveying and as-built surveying. "In the past, we mainly used the total station for groundbreaking surveys and as-built surveys, but now we are using the GNSS surveying machine 'HiPer HR' instead. At first, I thought that the GNSS receiver was a device for a reference station for ICT construction equipment, but when I actually used it for surveying, I changed my mind. If you turn on the power without worrying about visibility, you can start work immediately no matter where you are on the site all by yourself. In particular, this site was so large that it would take several days for 2~3 people to use a total station for surveying, but we were able to finish it in a few hours with only one person."

However, this does not mean that the total station is no longer used at all, and the imaging robotic total station "DS-200i" is also being used in places where height accuracy is required. In addition, for surveying work, equipment such as UAVs to acquire point cloud data has been introduced in anticipation of the future. President Mr. Kadono seems to be aiming to complete the design in-house without outsourcing. "As part of i-Construction, which aims to improve the productivity of construction sites by appointing a dedicated person to handle everything from observation to analysis, we have established the Drone IT Division, which uses drones for 3D surveying, design, and construction planning.

It seems that the layout navigator "LN-100" is active in the inspection process. It is used in combination with the construction system application "Kaisoku Navi", and he likes the fact that he can easily drive piles while looking at the drawings by importing 3D design data. However, Mr. Hikita warns, "There are some points to be careful about because it is easy." "It's absolutely necessary to scrutinize the drawings you import beforehand, and if you don't notice any errors in the drawings, you'll end up going on and on because it's easy to do, and you're going to have a hard time later. If you keep this in mind, the LN-100 is easy to use, so you can delegate work to young employees, and I think it is a machine that will help improve productivity."

Aiming for safety and zero overloading.

At this site, the bucket scale "LOADEX 100" is also being used. When I asked Mr. Hikita the reason, he replied, "Normally, when loading the soil from the site into a dump truck, it is weighed on a truck scale, but in reality, it is common to load a little less amount to avoid overloading. That's why we decided to use the LOADEX 100. I didn't fully trust it from the beginning. When we first introduced the system, we compare to the load capacity that we were able to grasp with the LOADEX 100 on a truck scale. Now we ensure that it is within the margin of error, we operate with confidence. It is also useful for loading concrete scraps. The system provides a record, which visualizes the transportation status of the day so it is effective to plan and arrange a dump track.

Keep going to promote the use of ICT

Finally, we asked President Kadono about his future aspirations. "I understand the superiority of the backhoe MG system, but it is a system that can only be useful if you have a certain amount of experience. In addition, we are considering adding one more dozer. After all, Topcon's system can be retrofitted and replaced, and can be operated flexibly."
