Laser Scanner Total Station Case Study
GTL-1000
The efficiency of 3D point cloud measurement has been more than doubled!
The usefulness of "GTL-1000" found in surveying of the park
Hidex Wajima Co., Ltd., Sapporo, Hokkaido, is a surveying company actively involved in 3D point cloud measurement. They have introduced Laser Scanner Total Station "GTL-1000". We visited Itabashi Kotsu Koen, where they are actually surveying. A briefing session was being held for Itabashi Ward officials, and all the equipment in use, including the GTL-1000, GLS-2200, UAV, and IP-S3 HD1 on a cart, were there.

Aiming to further improve the efficiency of 3D point cloud measurement.
Itabashi Ward is currently implementing a maintenance project to ensure the safe use of the park, and they will verify the results of this site regarding the use of 3D data and decide on the future policy.
Now, as mentioned above, the company already has a variety of 3D point cloud measurement equipment and a lot of experience, so why did the company introduce the "GTL-1000"? When I asked Mr. Hideki Wajima, the representative director, he immediately replied, "The purpose is to improve work efficiency." "The ability to do traverse surveys and 3D point cloud measurements at the same time was appealing."
Realization of increased efficiency in both field work and office work
President Wajima continues on the effects. “In the past, we had two teams working together, with the total station team setting up reference points and the scanner team taking 3D point cloud measurements. With the “GTL-1000”, one team and one unit can do it all. Considering the total cost and time, the increase in efficiency is more than double.”
When we asked Group 2 leader Norihiro Kawamura and Group 6 member Kenta Maeda about their impressions at the site, they said, "We use a variety of equipment, but the 'GTL-1000' is used very frequently because the site we work at is complex shape with many trees, and we have to scan 40 reference points," they said. He also experienced some difficulties unique to the park site. “The number of people coming to the part is more than we expected, and since the work is limited to a few hours a day when few people are in the park, the GTL-1000, which can simultaneously measure 3D point clouds while traversing, has been a great help.”
Koukichi Sasaki, Director of Development, also says that data analysis has also become more efficient. “The data is combined by simply importing it into MAGNET Collage, so it is very fast and easy to work with," he said. “In fact, we are also analyzing another site using "GTL-1000" at the same time, but we only receive the data from that site. In the past, analysis would have been difficult without knowing the site, but with the data measured with the GTL-1000, it can be done immediately.

Expectation for effects on road survey
Finally, we asked President Wajima about the use of the GTL-1000.” The GTL-1000 will be very effective for road survey and survey of urban areas. The GTL-1000 can simultaneously measure the reference point and details, which will reduce the amount of work from 10 to 20, compared to 100 up to now. And if we can quickly submit the results in a 3D model as a matter of course, we will be able to differentiate ourselves from our competitors, so I have high expectations for the GTL-1000.”
